E-WMS process properties compared - guided and non-guided
E-WMS
Introduction
E-WMS supports a variety of logistical processes, this document gives an
overview of properties supported or not supported for each process, and zooms in
on 'guided' and 'non-guided' processes.
Description
Guided and non-guided
A major difference between E-WMS processes is 'guided' and 'non-guided'.
Guided processes are the processes where transactions are sent to the
scanners, prior to the 'picking' stage. A typical sample is sales order
fulfillment.
Non-guided processes are the processes where the transaction starts on
the hand terminal, nothing is sent to the scanner 'to be picked'. A typical example
would be transfers.
Some processes support both guided and non-guided flows, depending on E-WMS
settings in Globe, or just by usage: Purchase Receipts (non-guided also called 'Free
Receipts'), Counts and Production Issues. E-WMS Replenishment can also be regarded as 'guided transfers', as opposite
to (free) Transfers.
Using guided issuing processes (Sales order fulfillment, Replenishment and
Production Issues) has following properties and benefits:
- when combined with 'picking advice': able to pre-select specific stock,
for example by batch expiration date
- when combined with 'picking advice': able to apply a specific location
policy (less stops, or clean out locations to make room for new stock)
- when combined with 'picking advice': stock check before sending picking
- able to create a logical picking route, based on location code for
example
- typical usage for Guided Production Issues: gathering all materials
before starting the production order
Free issues (production materials) or free receipts (free purchase receipts and
production receipts) has following benefits or properties:
- Scan as you receive or use a material for a production order (ad-hoc,
not planned)
- decision to receive or issue stock is done in the warehouse, not in the back office
- a free issue or receipt can immediately be processed (when ending the
scan line), while a guided issue or receipt has to be completed in full
before it can be processed.

*2 |
Focus to next field will not work optimally because 'location' has to be scanned AFTER scanning
the item code and before scanning serial/batch number and quantity.
To really apply 'one-line-scan', the location has to be prefilled with a fixed value. |
